Are house plans copyrighted?

Patents recorded and approved under the US Patent and Trademark Office are copyrighted, however they are all publicly available to be viewed by anyone, but it is illegal to copy or use the content the patent describes.

It seems as if house plans would be under similar conditions.

House plans can sometimes be viewed in different jurisdictions, you are never allowed to copy or Use the content. Some jurisdictions allow you to view or even print copyrighted material, and some wont even let you have access to it.

As mentioned in other locations in the FAQ forum, check with your local building department for their specific laws and limitations regarding accessing house plans from their records.

Sometimes, you can speak to local reprographics shops and they can usually provide you tips on how to get a hold of house plans that are available through the building department.
